The concept of the workspace has evolved, especially as startups and freelancing have become the norm, and the approach to work has adopted more flat and flexible structures. Those of us lucky enough to have flex-time are no longer sipping lattes from the corner cafe. Rather, we occupy alternative environments that enable us to work smarter and faster and to network – a community space that undresses the traditional office, infused with multi-dimensional functionality.
Maria Günther and Daniela Rank are the masterminds behind the environment integration at Factory Berlin Görlitzer Park. Their most recent project includes the Moonbase, located at our Mitte location, which houses high-potential scaling startup teams. Find out how the duo built their ship to rocket the top of Berlin’s arbeitsphere.
There’s an interesting story behind the founding of nod studios. What was it like?
Daniela: We used to work on the same team at 99chairs. At nod studios, Maria takes over the design side and has a creative lead, whereas I am more business focused and do project management. We made a pretty great match and once we started nod studios, a lot of clients and other team members decided to join us.
We set up our business quickly. Within a week, we were up and running, taking on new clients. We were lucky to have clients right away, but with a new business, one needs to set the foundations first. It has been a ride.
Maria: On top of that, we founded for the first time and encountered a steep learning curve. For certain reasons, we only had a week to found our business, whereas most people do it over a period of months.
What can you tell us about the Factory Berlin office at Görlitzer Park?
Maria: We worked with seven designers, a limited time frame, and it was a new concept: a community designing for a community. Each designer had a distinct style and personality, with free reign to do what they want. It was unique: we had a blank canvas! It gave us pure freedom to explore our creativity. It was awesome. For that, we really have to thank Udo Schloemer (founder of Factory Berlin).
You also designed the new Moonbase at the Factory Berlin Mitte location. What can we expect there?
Maria: It is quite different due to the architecture of the building, the space resembles apartments. Each flat has its own theme and there’s a consistent flow that unites them together. It is like shades of personality. The ground floor has less light so we used brighter colors and more lighting. As you move upwards, the spaces become more open, Scandinavian, darker, and cozier.
Who has inspired you?
Maria: It is going to sound super cliché, but I have to name, Daniela. She came into my life as a powerful woman, with a lot of experience, who has helped further my professional development. She showed me many things, introduced me to important concepts, and was confident in me. She has always supported me. My mother was also a huge influence on me. She has worked hard to show me what it meant to be an independent woman, that I need to be strong for myself and how to be a strong woman.
Daniela: I have three main people. I would have to say, my father, who has been my mentor for years. He carries a lot of experience and can provide emotional and professional support. I also have my former boss from Blacklane. Then there’s also The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) where I experience another phase of mentorship, which made a significant impact.
I never thought I would start my own business, but the opportunity came and with Maria, it is something that I could do. She is a great partner. From the beginning, it became clear how we were able to help each other, work together, and fill in the competencies for a better team. We have built a relationship of respect and trust.
