The Digital Health Gold Rush
With the largest healthcare system in Europe, there’s ample reason to bet on German innovators in the health industry.
To seize the market opportunity, venture capitalists have been investing in medtech at record highs in Germany following the pandemic. It’s a trend that Factory Berlin’s begun calling the digital health gold rush.
In increasing numbers, we’ve seen new startups emerge from the community in the medtech sector. The percentage of members working in healthtech has risen to be among the top 10 represented industries in our community. Over 17% of applications for our Stealth Mode program were digital health startups. Most notably amongst them is Wellspent which raised 1M in pre-seed last Autumn.
Sifted journalist Miriam Partington, moderates a panel of digital health startup leaders and investors. Together they discuss strategies to succeed in the booming, competitive market.

Eckhardt Weber is General Partner at the HealthTech VC Heal Capital.
In 2017, he founded the digital health platform Heartbeat Labs, where he was responsible for business development, investments and investor relations as Managing Director and was operationally involved in building five companies.
Previously, he was Managing Director at Europe’s leading fintech ecosystem finleap and started his career as a lawyer in venture capital and M&A.
Farina Schurzfeld is a social entrepreneur, advisor and speaker.
She is a co-founder of AndRobin where she supports startups in growing their business by acting as an Entrepreneurial sidekick. In 2016 she founded Selfapy – Germanys leading therapy platform for people suffering from mental health disorders.
As a “growth expert”, she lived in Sydney where she became part of the founding team of the discount portal Groupon.
Later she started Airtasker, a platform for mini-jobs, which is now listed on the ASX where she led the (international) expansion. During that time, she also founded Sydney’s largest co-working Space TSL, which counts more than 400 members today.
In 2017, Farina was awarded “Top 30 under 30” by Forbes Magazine and one of the “25 women that make the world more sustainable”.
Pia Marten is the CEO & Co-founder of Cannovum AG. At the age of 30, she is the youngest female CEO to list a company on the stock exchange. During her Master’s degree in International Business in Maastricht, she first came into contact with legal cannabis. Fascinated by this unique market, worth billions, she founded Cannovum AG in 2019.
Her goal is to exploit the potential of the oldest cultural and medicinal plant, cannabis, by making it accessible, whether as a therapy for serious diseases or, after legalization in 2024, as a modern consumable that can sustainably improve creativity and well-being in our society.
Samir El-Alami is CEO & Co-Founder of Doctorly, a Berlin-based health-tech startup disrupting the highly regulated (& archaic) medical practice management industry.
